An in depth look at what we really thirst for and how to fill it through the living water found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. An excellent reminder of difference in a goal and a desire. The fictional stories of women included in this book provide good examples of satisfying the “soul thirst”!
We were designed to enjoy authentic relationships with God and one another.
I’ve known God for many years—so why are my relationships still unfulfilling? Why doesn’t my successful career satisfy me? How do I respond when past pain and trauma rises to the surface? Why do I still experience loneliness even when I’m with a loving spouse or significant other? Shouldn’t knowing the Bible change my experience of God?
These questions form the heart of Soul Thirst, a blend of accessible story and biblical life principles that have transformed women around the world as they come to understand God’s design for the human heart. Walk with five women—Lisa, Jennifer, Abby, Angela, and Susan—as they come face-to-face with the reality of the longing of their souls. Discover the four capacities of our divine design as each woman encounters God in her story. Drawing on decades of ministering to women, authors Gwynne Johnson and Kelly Arabie create a relatable story of heartache, honesty, and finding God. Together, we’ll discern the beginning of our soul thirst, and we’ll learn how to experience true satisfaction.
Testimonials
Thank you for Soul Thirst! – Sally
I’m praising God for His abundant care, grace, love, and patience! My husband and I have both had to grow and change many times in our walk with the Lord, but His timing is perfect.
I’ve sought professional Christian counseling a few times over the years and through them God has helped me unravel my challenges and stay the course through the most difficult times in my adult life. Al-Anon and then a 12 step Christ-centered program were also instrumental in leading me to healthier mind-sets. However, who knew I still had so much to learn!
Soul Thirst is a whole new way for me to understand my reactions, depression, etc. I so appreciate all the scripture you have imbedded in each level of understanding. I’ve always had difficulty trusting, but the scriptures verify all that you are teaching us. God truly meets our needs at the time in our maturing process when we are able to handle the next step in His guidance.
Thank you, Gwynne and Kelly
Soul Thirst is a must-read for anyone feeling spiritually dry, restless, or weary – Belinda
In Soul Thirst, the authors, Gwynne Johnson and Kelly Arabie, invite the reader on a deeply spiritual journey to understanding one of the most profound truths of the Christian faith — that the human heart has been thirsty since the fall from the Garden of Eden, and only God Himself can satisfy that longing.
From the very first pages, the book captures the universal ache we all feel — that restless desire for fulfillment, meaning, and peace — and traces it back to our separation from God after the fall and mankind’s expulsion from walking with God in the garden.
What makes Soul Thirst stand out is its honesty about how humanity continually seeks, again and again, to quench this thirst through our own efforts — through success, relationships, pleasure, or even practicing religion without the primary focus on relationship.
The authors skillfully weave biblical insights with personal reflection through genuine characters, showing how these substitutes only deepen our emptiness when we ignore the way God originally designed us: to experience emotions and free will, yet live in communion with Him.
Each chapter gently draws readers back to the living water Jesus offers, reminding us of the Samaritan woman at the well — a symbol of every soul trying to draw from empty wells of self-sufficiency. The book doesn’t simply diagnose our spiritual hunger; it offers a remedy grounded in Scripture, prayer, and intimacy with Christ.
The tone is pastoral, yet practical, blending theology with heartfelt encouragement. The well thought out characters and multiple plots make this an insightful choice for small group studies. Readers will leave not only challenged but refreshed — reminded that our deepest thirst is not a flaw to fix, but an invitation to return to the Source of life. Soul Thirst is a must-read for anyone feeling spiritually dry, restless, or weary of chasing satisfaction in all the wrong places. It’s a call to stop striving and start drinking deeply from the grace of God — the only One who can truly fill the emptiness within.
… simply beautiful, inspiring and fulfilling.
This book is designed for women who want to use bible teachings in their everyday life in a way that is truly meaningful. The information is in a context I’ve never really thought about before but is simply beautiful, inspiring and fulfilling. Excellent for a group study. I highly recommend this book as it fits every woman’s needs no matter their stage in life.
The principles in this book … had a profound impact on my life – Joye
The principles in this book, Soul Thirst, had a profound impact on my life 25 years ago when I joined a group of women to go through the study, Developing a Discerning Heart. The author of the study, Gwynne Johnson, collaborated with Kelly Arabie to now put these life-changing truths into book form. It is written in a way that you can read individually or find a small group of friends to go through it together (which is probably the most ideal). I have shared the insights in the book with women I have taught and mentored over the years. Reading through it reminded me of what has helped contribute to my experiencing more meaningful personal relationships as well as the deep intimacy I enjoy with God as I have applied the truths Gwynne and Kelly have so effectively presented. I highly recommend it.
